Calvary Episcopal Church

Vestry  Meeting

July 16, 2002

Attendees: Dorn Crawford, Jeff Webb, Harvey Turner, Will Cary, Bill Crawford, Jamie  Hendon, Ruth Robins, Susan Baker, Beverly Haverstock, Ginger Grizzle, Joan Wempe, Rev. Humke and Bishop Gulick

The meeting opened at 5:25 PM with a prayer given by Bishop Gulick

Committee reports were postponed to have a general discussion with Bishop Gulick. The Bishop stated that he has and continues to work with Rev Culpepper on going forward with his career.  It was also important to know that Calvary’s severance package with Rev. Culpepper was “more than fair”.

The Bishop gave a retrospective view of Calvary’s search process and its end result.  A conclusion is that the rector of Calvary needs good musical understanding, preaching skills and per Ruth Robins, being a human connector.

Where does Calvary go next?

·        Vestry, with the Bishop’s help, can accelerate the process of searching for a proven “excellent” candidate as well as utilizing a “time certain” term.  More than an interim position, it establishes a specific date to review performance, maybe 3-4 years. You thus avoid the gearing up and going through the Search Committee process.  Three names have been submitted by the Bishop to the Wardens.

Q & A:

Does this preclude going through the traditional process? Probably due to the chance of a “sloppy” search

Do you advise, yea or nay, for the Vestry to be the Search Committee? No, already too much to do though it could be done particularly due to Calvary’s size

Does the selection have to be term certain? No, it can’t be forced but it does give Calvary an “out”

A general discussion of names proposed by the Bishop.

Proposal: (J.Hendon, Ruth Robin) that the Vestry, keeping current terms in mind, be established as the Search Committee for finding Calvary’s new Rector. Passed unanimously.
