Absent: Sandra Cherry, Mary Sachs, David Stewart
Opening Prayer
The meeting was called to order at 5:16 p.m.; Fr. Morris offered a
meditation from “Meditations for Vestry
Members” followed by the Lord’s Prayer.
Minutes of September meeting
Sally Reisz moved the approval of the September 20, 2005 minutes of
the vestry; seconded by Jamie Hendon. Motion carried.
Committee Reports
Finance:
Andrea Morris presented the
financial statements through September 2005. Jerry Lyndrup moved that the
report be accepted; Nick Baker seconded. Motion carried.
Andrea then presented a
draft budget for 2006. The Finance Committee will meet November 10 to prepare a
recommended budget for approval of the vestry at the November meeting. The
request by the Diocese that each parish’s diocesan support be 15% of the
congregational income will be considered at that time.
Stewardship:
Downey Gray reported that the 2006
stewardship campaign is well underway and that updates will be available in the
bulletin and on the web. Downey also reported that his next project was to
energize a Planned Giving Program.
Worship:
Jonathan Smith drew the
vestry’s attention to the October written staff report for Music. The vestry was
also informed that the upcoming special holiday services at Calvary are as
follows: Thanksgiving Day, 10:30; Christmas Pageant Sunday (4 Advent, December
18), 8:00 and 10:30 with Eucharist; Christmas Eve, 4:00 and 9:30 (with
incense); Christmas Day, 10:30 only; New Year’s (Holy Name) Day, 10:30 only.
Fr. Ned will preach at the 12:10 All Saints Day service at Christ Church
Cathedral on November 1 and the preacher at the Thanksgiving Day service at
Calvary will be from either the Cathedral or Our Merciful Savior. Fr. Ned
reported that the 9:15 service has about 40 communicants and that the 11:00 is
averaging about 20-25 fewer communicants than before the 9:15 service began.
Christian Formation:
Elyse Hensley drew the
vestry’s attention to the October written staff report for Christian Formation.
The Christian Formation program is well under way and the children’s choir is
looking forward to singing again at a service in the future. Via Media
continues to meet on Thursdays from 6:00-8:00. The youth will participate in a
special youth event at St. Matthew’s Episcopal on October 30 and also on
November 8 will help host an event as part of the Festival of Faiths at the Cathedral of the Assumption, November
7-11.
Building, House and Grounds:
Jerry Lyndrup and Nancy Anderson reported
on the various maintenance projects at Calvary and presented a written report
for inclusion with the minutes. Nancy reported that the first floor women’s
restroom (across from the kitchen) is being refurbished and generally made more
pleasant. Laina Brown suggested that a ministry for parishioners willing to
clean the church be established to assist the cleaning service. Many other
parishes have such committees for specialized cleaning needs.
Outreach:
Jim Barnes drew the vestry’s attention to
the October written staff report for Outreach. He reported that the Habitat for
Humanities “raise the roof” event went well. Jerry Lyndrup reported that
finishing the project this year might be a challenge as some problems have
arisen within the HFH project itself.
Communication:
Meg Scharre drew the
vestry’s attention to the October written staff report for Communication. She
pointed out that the Connection would
now be a monthly newsletter and that the deadline for articles is noon on the
twentieth of each month. She also requested that if anyone wanted publicity for
some Calvary event they need to let her know well in advance so that she can
contact media before their deadlines. Calvary has many ministries and does many
things that need to be publicized more.
Parish Life:
Laina Brown reported that the annual parish
picnic went well with 53 persons attending and expressed thanks to the Rays and
to Sandra Cherry. Via email, Sandra Cherry reported that the pictorial
directory was submitted a week ahead of schedule and the proof copy is expected
back during the first week of November. Jim Barnes, Doug Spaulding and Sandra
Cherry will proof it and send it back so that we might get the finished product
soon after that. Sandra also reported that thank you notes have been sent where
appropriate regarding the picnic and that articles for the Connection regarding the picnic and the directory have been
submitted.
By-Laws/Legal:
Nick Baker reported that the vandalism of
the stained-glass window is subject to a $500 deductible. A claim will be made
to the carrier as soon as the estimate, police report and pictures of the
damage have been completed.
Junior Warden:
Downey Gray expressed thanks to Sandra
Cherry for her work on getting the pictorial directory completed efficiently.
He also reported on a leadership conference he attended at Bowling Green that
is the subject of his Connection
article this month. He also reported that the deposit has been sent to Wooded
Glen for the vestry retreat January 27-28.
Senior Warden:
Sally Reisz asked the vestry to be sure to
complete a pink “Time and Talent” form (even if they signed up at the fair) so
that the process of getting 2006 committees and ministries established could
begin. She also reported that the process
for nominating persons for election to the 2008 vestry class will begin
immediately with December 1 as the deadline for nominations. She also noted
that a report from the 2003 Audit Committee has been received, a copy of which
will be included as a part of these minutes. The 2004 audit is well underway.
Sally reported receipt of another Kroger fund-raising check and vestry members
suggested additional fund raising events for consideration by the Fund-Raising
Committee: a dinner, a musical, a breakfast cookbook, a play (such as “Murder
in the Cathedral”).
Deacon:
Rhonda Lee noted that her ordination to the priesthood will occur
on December 10 at Christ Church Cathedral – Ned, Sally and Downey will be her
presenters. The Adult Formation class, Religion and Politics in Ancient
Isreal, concludes October 30 with Father Morris taking up the topic Profiles
of Hope on November 6.
Rector:
Fr. Morris gave the vestry an update on the ill of the parish. He
also reiterated the dates for the Festival of Faiths and for the special
services at Calvary during November and December.
Old Business:
None
New Business:
Deacon Rhonda Lee was asked to leave the
meeting and the vestry went into executive session to discuss a personnel
matter; motion by Sally Reisz, seconded by Downey Gray. No action being taken
in the session, the vestry reconvened; motion by Sally Reisz, seconded by
Downey Gray. Sally Reisz moved, seconded by Jim Barnes, that Downey Gray be
authorized to proceed as discussed in executive session. Motions passed.
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the vestry is November 15,
2005, 5:15, Calvary Church with Sandra Cherry officiating Compline.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at
7:15p.m. with Compline officiated by the Reverend Rhonda Lee.
Respectfully submitted,
James M. Barnes
Secretary

Staff Reports
Outreach
1. Food Donations: This report covers the period from September 12 to October 11. During
this time, we received donations of food worth $1567.00 Although we had
several donations of cans from various sources last month, our canned goods
supply is again way down.
2. Food
Distribution: During September, we gave out 91 food bags that
fed 142 people. We are gearing up for our annual Thanksgiving Turkey
distribution that will take place on November 21, 22, and 23. We will be
assisted by the children in Christian Formation this year, as well as the usual
adults.
3. Clothes Shops for Women and Kids: Thanks to clothing contributed exclusively by
Calvary people, and thanks to the intense interest given to this project by our
weekday volunteers, the number of people clothed at Calvary given out from September
12 to October 11 was 69. We are again low on clothing for men. As winter
approaches, we need to plead for coats!
4. Cookbook, CD, and Breads: Bill Garnar’s bread recipes are in the new
Calvary cookbook that was released recently in conjunction with a CD of the
Lenten Recitals.
5. Book Aid: Books continue to come in, and are well cared for
by David Webb, with advice from Timmons Owens.
6. Crisis Care (Outreach of sorts!) Crisis Care organization is being looked at by
Deacon Lee. Let’s hope we can enlist many more volunteers
7. The Refugees: Since the hurricanes, this category takes on a
whole new meaning. We assembled and took items to the Red Cross, and contributions
have consistently been made by parishioners to ERD.
8. CHOICES: The Dickinsons hosted a fundraiser for this
group at the Bach Haus on August 14 at 4:00 p.m., giving a 45 minute organ
recital. The total raised is now over $2,200. CHOICES is a non-profit group
specializing in housing for homeless women.
MUSIC
The Calvary children’s choir sang for Stewardship
Sunday – rendering a delightful hymn that had a definite point: to give and give, and give again, what God
hath given thee. We have in recent weeks had the pleasure of listening to
Julia Richardson, harp, as well as her sisters (Mary Gail and Annie) playing
the violin and cello, respectively. Rosemary Wilson has also honored us with
her violin playing, and Marsha Webb and Judy Wilson will play for the anthem on
October 16. Anne Marie deZeeuw and Larry Frederiksen presented expert bagpipe
music for the service on October 2, and we have welcomed Joshua Lewis and his
guitar for the 9:15 service (first, third, and fifth Sundays with guitar, second
and fourth Sundays with organ and occasionally other instruments). We look
forward to the Calvary “Little” Strings playing at the baptism of Louise
Morris. The Calvary “Big” Orchestra (strings, flute, and harp) is already
preparing music for Christmas Eve (9:30 p.m.).
We
mention these different musical venues because every church is not as fortunate
as Calvary to have that many. I would be remiss, however, in just lauding the
occasional musicians, because we have a wonderful adult choir that sings at least
two anthems every single Sunday. So to all who make a joyful noise unto the
Lord, and to Elyse Hensley, Judy Wilson, and Melvin Dickinson who direct them,
THANK YOU!
Communications

1. THE
NEXT CALVARY CONNECTION deadline is October 20. That is a Thursday and the
deadline is at NOON in order to give time for proofing that afternoon. You will rremember that a change in policy means
that the CONNECTION will now be a monthly publication, beginning with this
issue. The deadline will always be the 20th of the month, no
exceptions. If the articles do not meet the deadline, they will be published
the next month. I really hope to stick to that, in fairness to all! The
Editorial Board will now meet on the first Wednesday of the month and
accordingly met on October 5.
2. Calvary has a new logo that appeared first on a
bulletin for September 4, and subsequently will be on almost everything that
has to do with Calvary’s publications, including stationary, brochures, and
newsletters. We are grateful to Andy Frazier for creating the logo, at right.
We hope that he will find time to incorporate that logo on the front of the
CONNECTION.
3. Webmaster Jim Barnes continues to do a fantastic
job of updating and adding to the Calvary website. NEW: Links to the Diocese of
Kentucky, to ERD, and Anglicans on Line (we are listed there as well). As October
11, we have had 13,828 visitors to the website since March 31, 2003. That’s 600
in the last month alone! As everyone has heard, the Pictorial Directory is well
underway and we expect the release sometime in January. Sandra Cherry, Doug
Spaulding, and Andy Frazier are especially to be commended.

Christian Formation Report to the Vestry
October 12, 2005
Calvary Youth recently raised funds in excess of $300 to
support Dare To Care at the annual Community Hunger Walk. Tessa and Tori Long, Peter and Harvey
Fulton, David Webb and myself enjoyed the cool fall weather as we walked on the
Waterfront. Thank you to everyone who
sponsored and made this a success, earning everyone a t-shirt.
On September 25 several youth families met Father Ned and
myself for a pizza dinner to make plans for the year ahead, as well as shared
faith stories as well as prayers. We
look forward to serving the community as well as socializing with youth from
other area churches. On November 20 we
will have an opportunity to support our youth as they commit themselves
Thanks to Mary Fewell, and her willing volunteers, toddlers
in the Nursery are hearing a story every Sunday during the Christian Formation
Hour. We appreciate the loving
environment that is provided to the very youngest Calvary members and visitors,
including the welcome care by our “sitters,” Darlene and Jerry Clay. If you are upstairs Sunday mornings, please
stop in and share your appreciation.
On Sunday, October 23, the Calvary teaching staff will be
meeting in the morning to plan ahead, as well as evaluate how classes have been
going since September 18. You will
receive a summary of our meeting in the next Vestry Report.
Plans are underway to renew the Children's Newsletter. Molly Isaacs-McLeod and myself have been
making preparations and will be coming out with the first newsletter later this
fall.
Also underway are plans for an Intergenerational All Saints'
event in Room 203 for children and youth, the annual Advent Event, and the
upcoming Christmas Pageant.
Next week the children and youth will begin collecting
tokens for turkeys to help contribute to Calvary's Food Closet for
Thanksgiving.
Please contact me anytime you have questions, concerns,
ideas, etc. I am always eager to share
news and get news!
And thank Jerry Lyndrup for his work in getting windows cut
in all the classroom doors. The hall is
brighter, not to mention that we are now meeting code specifications.
Via Media is going strong with over 20 participants!
