acclamation; seconded by Andrea Morris. Motion carried.
Minutes of April 20, 2004 and
June 12, 2004 meetings
Ruth Robins moved the approval of the April 20 and June 12 minutes
of the vestry; seconded by Nick Baker. Motion carried.
Committee Reports
Finance: Andrea presented the financial statements
through May 31, 2004. Nick Baker moved that the report be accepted; Sally Reisz
seconded. Motion carried.
Andrea reported that an audit of the financial records will begin
this coming week. The records of 2002 will be reviewed and the records of 2003
will be audited. The Calvary Audit Committee will become involved after the
audit.
Andrea informed the vestry of her plan
relative to the balloon payment of the Parker Hall loan approved at the April
20 meeting. The Executive Committee moved that the entire Parker Endowment Fund
#6(7016), account 001103 ($552,790.12) be closed out, that from this amount a
check be written to make the balloon payment of $199,787.66 thereby paying off
the loan and the remainder to be incorporated into Endowment Fund #1(5006),
account 001100. Motion carried.

reach conclusion to a personnel matter as discussed in executive session;

Art relinquished the chair to the Junior Warden, Sally Reisz.
Committee Reports (continued)
Parish
Life: Sandra Cherry
reported that the Foyer groups were up and running and that everyone involved
was excited about the experience. She also reported that Calvary did not have
enough women show up for the last softball game (each team must be able to
field five men and five women at each game) and, therefore, was subject to a
forfeit and a $25 fine. The other team did not have enough women either, so
both were fined.
Staff Reports: The written staff reports were called to
the attention of the vestry and are incorporated herein.
Other Committee Reports were postponed
until the July meeting.
Calling of the New
Rector
The Executive Committee moved that the vestry approve the calling
of the Reverend Jonathan Edward Morris
as the sixteenth rector of Calvary Church, Louisville, with compensation and
benefits to be commensurate with a finalized Rector Letter of Agreement.
Old Business
None
New Business
The vestry approved not filling the vacancy created by the death of
Ginger Grizzle because the term of office would expire in December of this
year.
Art announced that Sandy Brashear, Ginger Grizzle’s sister, was the
beneficiary of the estate and that the monies will be used to fund a Habitat
for Humanities home in the name of Ginger and Calvary. Any balance remaining
will be given as a gift to the Calvary Endowment fund.
Art asked the vestry to think about establishing a policy regarding
the process for accepting and assigning unrestricted bequeaths and other gifts
to Calvary. He suggested that it should be policy that the vestry make a
determination of the use of each such undesignated, unrestricted gifts and that
if it is determined that the funds are to go to the Endowment Funds the amount
is to be used to further reduce the debt to the Fund beyond the monthly payment
already approved at the April 20 meeting. The vestry will be asked to discuss
this at a later date.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:40
p.m. with closing prayer by Fr. Humke.
The next regularly schedule meeting of the vestry is July 20, 2004,
at 5:15 p.m. at Calvary Church.
Respectfully submitted,
Secretary
STAFF REPORTS
2004 Outreach, Music and Communications
June 2004
Outreach:
1. Food
Donations: This report covers the period from April 20
through June 12, as there was no May regular vestry meeting. The value of food
donations during this period is $5,272. Although the rumor about Kentucky
Harvest giving us less is true, Walt Morris has personally accepted the
challenge and procured donations from other sources. We also need for Calvary
people to step up and donate a few more cans each week. Donations each week
average about $60 worth of food, mostly from two households. For a little bit
of humor, read the tarantula story in the latest CALVARY CONNECTION, if you
have not yet done so.
2. Food
Distribution: During April, we gave out 114 food bags that fed
182 people. During May, we gave out 108 food orders that fed 187 people.
3. Clothes Shops
for Women and Kids:
Thanks to clothing contributed exclusively by Calvary people, and thanks to the
intense interest given to this project by our weekday volunteers, the number of
people clothed at Calvary continues to increase. Since April 14, we have
clothed 76 people, including 45 women, 17 men, and 14 children. Without
volunteers Ned Reiter, Larry Brown, John Cunningham, Joyce Tichenor, Bill
Adams, and Lois O’Hara, this ministry would not be half as successful. We need
lots more clothing for men!
4. Breads: Only activity is that the raspberries are in,
and jelly may appear!
5. Book Aid: David Webb is now in charge of the books, and has
done a wonderful job, still assisted by Timmons Owens.
6. Crisis Care (Outreach of sorts!) Jean Dietz has been making calls to the church
most Wednesdays and then following up on those who are sick or in crisis. Their
help has been greatly appreciated and very encouraging. Lois O’Hara also
continues to write welcoming notes to those who sign the guest book.
7. The Refugees: Sherifis, Lasus, and Lil all doing well.
8. Literacy: We still need more tutors.
9. Hosting: The church was filled with children on May 3 for
the annual Bach Society children’s concert, narrated by Dr. John Hale. The
Carle wedding was June 12. The Charles Gruenberger Memorial service was April
24, and there will be a memorial service TBA for Willis Meigs, who died June
11.
10. HABITAT: A
schedule of events is posted on the bulletin board.
MUSIC:
1.
As stated
above, May 3 was the Bach Society children’s concert, a church full of children
receiving the educational genius of Dr. John Hale. The audience included over
200 students of parishioner Ralph Hirsbrunner.
2.
Our
children’s choir and orchestra joined the adult choir for the Bishop’s
visitation on May 9.
3.
Mary Jane
Booker gave a solo violin recital in the Loft on June 3, and all of Judy
Wilson’s violin students gave a recital there on May 14.
4.
Calvary
was publicized on June 6 at Grace Lutheran Church in Clarksville, TN, when
Melvin and Margaret Dickinson gave a duo organ recital. We thank Sam Hodges,
who played the organ at Calvary while we were away.
Communications:
1. The vestry committee on advertising (or whatever
we call letting people know what Calvary is all about) has printed some cards
to be given to visitors.
2. May’s End-June-July edition has recently been
mailed. The next deadline is July 25, unless the vestry tells us otherwise
concerning the calling of a new rector!
3. Webmaster Jim Barnes continues to do a fantastic
job of updating and adding to the Calvary website. Both candidates who recently
visited Calvary have avidly read the website and commented favorably on it. As
of June 14, we have had a total of 6,227
visits to our website since we installed the counter 14 months ago.
Thanks, Jim!

Education Report to the Vestry
June 2004
Help Needed: Apparently the recent rain storms have
increased the leaky window in Room 203 and there is now a crack in the wall
below the window. There is also
apparently some leaking from the roof into Room 204 as there is a musty, mildew
odor. I hope that both of these
problems are minor, but it would be good to have these repaired, especially
before fall, so that we have a clean and safe environment. Thanks!
We have a tentative
reservation for a weekend at All Saints’ for September 25 through September 27.
In May we closed the
2003/2004 Church School year program with an Appreciation Breakfast for
teachers and their families, for which we thank the Brown family for their
wonderful meal! This was followed by an
Awards Ceremony where children and teachers were presented with awards and
gifts. In staying with the Calvary
tradition, vegetable plants were also distributed to students in hopes that we
will receive at least a few tomatoes for the Calvary Food Closet.
Last week I was
contacted by Rev. Joe Smith from St. Luke’s to see if I would mind if his DRE,
Angela Billingsley, “shadowed” with me for a few weeks over the summer. She and I have met several times to go over
various issues involving educational programming and she attended the Godly
Play Class. The Monthly Leader
Luncheons, which I am still organizing, are a wonderful place for new and
experienced leaders and teachers to meet to discuss, compare, and share.
Gail Richardson has
been continuing to tell Godly Play Stories for the younger children and will
continue through mid-July. In August,
we will offer four weeks of classes for all ages to begin working on projects
for the Calvary Art Exhibit to be held this fall.
Beth
Rudwell and I met recently to discuss the Calvary Art Exhibit. Here are some possible dates: The last two weeks in October, the first two
weeks in November, or any combination of those dates. One possibility that I might suggest is to consider an evening
program on All Saints’ Day that might include some form of dinner and events
related to All Saints as well as offering the exhibit for people to view, but I
assume that something like this would be best discussed with the new
rector. Unfortunately we will not know
the date that Dr. John Hale is available to lecture until the end of August or
early September.
If any of you have
suggestions for new teachers, please see me ASAP!
We would like to begin
the fundraising project for Godly Play materials this fall, and am looking for
suggestions. We hope to enhance the
call for hand bells rather than become distracting.
Thank you for your
support and for including the staff in the visits by the clergy
candidates. It was wonderful to meet
them!
Callie
