Opening Prayer
The meeting was called to order at 5:20p.m.; Fr. Morris offered a
meditation and prayer.
Minutes of April meeting
Jerry Lyndrup
moved the approval of the April 19, 2005, minutes of the vestry; seconded by
Sally Reisz. Motion carried.
Committee Reports
Finance:
Fr.
Morris presented the financial statements through April 30, 2005. Sally Reisz
moved that the report be accepted with emendation of account 5290, Major
Maintenance, which should read $56,948 as YTD Actual and $26,381.35 as YTD
Budget; Downey Gray seconded. Motion carried.
Sally Reisz presented two addenda to the financial statements:
summaries of transactions in the Third Street Mortgage account (#5571) and in
the Endowment Loan (#5580) account with particular emphasis on and clarifying
payments on the principal of each.
A letter from Editorial Services Company regarding their
decision to exercise the option to renew the Lease on the Third Street property
was distributed. Jim Barnes moved that the Lease be renewed pursuant to
Paragraph 37 with rental for the renewal period of October 2, 3005 through
September 30, 2010 set at $1,282.29 per month. Jerry Lundrup seconded. Motion
carried.
Fr. Morris reported that the Financial Advisory Committee met
and that the next meeting is scheduled for June 9. He also reported that the
Endowment Advisory Committee will meet in early June. Representatives from PNC
Bank will be invited to both meetings.
Jim Barnes reported that a new Savin copier has been purchased
from Duplicator Sales for $8700. A down payment of $870 has been completed and
the remainder of the principal will be paid in 24 equal installments of $326.25
(no interest is being charged). The maintenance agreement on the new copier is
$83.33 per month or $900 annually – Jim reported that the annual payment method
has been selected as it saves money. The old copier has been serviced, has
replaced the copier which was used by Christian Formation and a new maintenance
agreement is being negotiated for it. A $392 credit is being applied after
cancellation of the old maintenance agreement. Three old copiers were taken
away by the vendor. The vestry expressed thanks to Jim for his work on this project.
Stewardship:
Downey Gray reported that the new and
increased pledges are now at over $37,000 with a couple of new pledges
included.
Worship:
The
vestry’s attention was drawn to the May written staff report for Music. Fr.
Morris reported that the upcoming Sunday was Pentecost and that the tradition
of red balloons during the retiring procession would be maintained. He also
reported that the children’s choir will sing The Seed Song (B. Pulkingham) at the beginning of the service.
Fr. Morris reminded the
vestry that Rhonda Lee will graduate from the Presbyterian Seminary on May 22
and will be ordained as a deacon on June 4 at Christ Church Cathedral. She will
serve her deaconate at Calvary beginning June 5. The Diocese will pay her
salary for the six months of her deaconate. She should be eligible for
ordination to the priesthood in late December, hopefully here at Calvary. Fr.
Morris indicated that Rhonda would then be eligible for assignment as an
assistant at Calvary in January. Since she will continue to work on her
doctorate, she would be part-time and the Diocese would pay for ¼ of that
salary for 1 ½ years. Fr. Morris has a meeting in May with The Very Rev. Dr.
Jay Magness, Canon to the Ordinary and Diocesan placement officer, to determine
what all that might entail.
Fr. Morris reminded the vestry that
Confirmation/Bishop’s Visitation is set for June 5 (Rhonda’s first day as a
Deacon) with approximately 5 youth and 4-5 adults scheduled for confirmation.
He also reported that three new Chalicers have been assigned to the 8:00
service rotation (Jamie Hendon, Linda Klein and Lincoln Lewis) and three to the
11:00 service rotation (Elyse Hensley, Sally Reisz and David Stewart). He
further reported that the summer service schedule begins June 12, 8:00 and
10:30. An activity for the children will begin at 9:15 during the summer
schedule.
Christian Formation:
Elyse
Hensley drew the vestry’s attention to the May written staff report for
Christian Formation. Elyse announced that Christian Formation Awards Day is set
for Sunday, May 22 at 10:00, that the Calvary young strings group will perform
at the Offertory on June 4, and that the youth will serve lunch at the Wayside
Mission that day.
David
Stewart reported that the Adult Forum Advisory group met and had a fruitful
discussion.
Building, House and Grounds:
Jerry Lyndrup reported that termites had
been noticed in the kitchen after swarming from stored wood in the basement.
They have been taken care of under the pest-control contract. He also reported that
room 204 remains a problem (water damage) as does one of the women’s restrooms.
Also, a problem with the lighting of the steeple has been reported. He
continues to work on these issues.
The Building, House and Grounds committee
was asked to include on its list of projects a review of repairs needed at the
Third Street property so as to get some idea of the costs of such repairs.
Nick Baker noted that Jeff Webb has
suggested that Calvary purchase a defibrillator. Red Cross First Aid and CPR
training may also be wise. The matter was referred to the Insurance Committee
first for a review of liability issues.
Outreach:
Jim Barnes drew the vestry’s attention to
the May written staff report for Outreach with special emphasis on the request
by “Choices”, a group helping homeless women and children that is seeking a
representative from Calvary to serve on their board. Susan Baker is that
representative.
Sandra Cherry reported
that Lilamani Perera is doing well in Sri Lanka. Her kidney situation is under
control but she is now going blind in her good eye.
Communication:
Jim
Barnes drew the vestry’s attention to the May written staff report for
Communication. Fr. Morris noted that Andy and Carrie Frazier report that the
new Calvary logo will be unveiled in the Fall.
Parish Life:
Sandra Cherry reported that the Foyer
groups were going well for the most part with one group having some problems.
She also reported that the Softball effort is losing enthusiasm and not enough
Calvary players are showing up to field a team without borrowing subs from
other teams. She further reminded the vestry that picture taking for the
Pictorial Directory begins September 26. Sandra is also trying to get up a
Derby Dinner group from Calvary and anyone interested should talk with her. She
also reminded the vestry that the Calvary Camp at All Saints is Friday and
Saturday, May 20 and 21.
By-Laws:
Nick Baker distributed a copy of the
current by-laws and related statutes. Further review is continuing.
Junior Warden:
Downey Gray had nothing further to report
having already spoken elsewhere during the meeting.
Senior Warden:
Sally Reisz reported that a newly
reconstituted Program Council has been established and that it will meet this
coming Sunday (May 22) after the 11:00 service.
Sally also read to the vestry the response
from attorney Terry McCoy relative to the vestry’s concern regarding the
inventory and closing statement of the Zilpha Stovall estate. No action taken
at this time.
Sally also passed around a thank you note
from the Morris’ regarding the julep cup presented to Lillian.
Fr. Morris reported that
Dr. Richard Dame died Monday, May 16, and that a burial service is scheduled
for 11:00 Friday morning at Calvary with inurnment of ashes at Cave Hill
following the service. Fr. Morris further reported that the Executive Committee
recommends that the June meeting of the vestry by cancelled. Fr. Morris will be
on vacation and professional development leave at that time. Supply clergy,
along with Rhonda Lee, are scheduled for June 19, June 24 and July 3.
Old Business:
New Business:
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the vestry is July 19,
2005, 5:15, Calvary Church with Sally Reisz officiating Compline.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at
(7:15p.m.) with Compline officiated by David Stewart.
Respectfully submitted,
James M. Barnes

Staff Reports
Outreach,
Music and Communications
Outreach:
1.
Food Donations: This report
covers the period from April 12 to May 9. During this time, we received
donations of food worth $2018.00!The BIG donation this time was from
Kentucky Harvest – 1500 very good cans! We thank Walt Morris, who “fetched” it
all, and those who helped carry it all in and shelve it. We were down to almost
nothing, for those of you who think these six huge boxes will last forever!
2. Food
Distribution: During March, we gave out 98 food bags that fed 172 people.
That’s less than last month.
3. Clothes
Shops for Women and Kids: Thanks to clothing contributed
exclusively by Calvary people, and thanks to the intense interest given to this
project by our weekday volunteers, the number of people clothed at Calvary from April 12 to May 9 was 45. Special
thanks goes to Anna Havrilesco, a U of L student who has been volunteering on
Saturdays. She has spent hours putting away clothing, and we are most
appreciative. We are grateful to the family of Pat Clark, who donated all of
her clothing to the Calvary Clothes Closet.
4.
Breads: Bill Garnar made bread for the Lenten Series! Although his health
does not permit weekly baking, his bread recipes are in the new Calvary
cookbook.
5.
Book Aid: Books continue to come in, and are well cared for by David Webb,
with advice from Timmons Owens.
6.
Crisis Care (Outreach of sorts!) After
experiencing first hand what crisis care meals really mean, I am a firm
advocate of this ministry. Melvin and I are very grateful to the many people
who have showed up with food during and after his hospital stay – bringing food
is the BEST thing anyone can do! So if you feel like volunteering to make a
meal, please see Jean Dietz or Nancy Anderson immediately. It’s a priceless
ministry, and a huge comfort.
7.
The Refugees: We continue to be grateful to Louisa Henson and Ted Mussler
for their kind and ongoing interest, now well into the sixth year, of the
Sherifi family.
8.
CHOICES: We have received a request from the Board of “Choices” for
Calvary to have a representative added to their Board. CHOICES is a group whose
purpose is to help homeless women and children. Presently, they own two houses
on Marshall Street and have been given a third. Five women live in one; two
families in the other at present. If anyone is interested in serving on the
board (contributing fundraising and marketing skills), please call Patricia
Nightengale at 339-9901, or the executive director, Beth Hedges, at 585-3780.
(This request ran in last month’s vestry report, and there.were no takers.)
MUSIC:
1. The CD highlights
of the 2005 Lenten Series has been released, along with a 32 page cookbook, and
the sales thus far generated are approaching $1,500. All proceeds go towards
the new Savin copier. ($19 for both; $6 for cookbook alone; $13 for CD alone).
2. Children’s music
groups will offer their musical talents on May 22 and June 5.
3. We thank Lynn
Thompson, not only for his recording and creation of the CD, but also are
grateful to him in advance for assisting me during the month of May as Melvin
Dickinson is out of commission due to surgery.
Communications:
1.
THE CALVARY CONNECTION deadline is MAY 15. That’s this
coming Sunday! I especially thank John Bugbee, Rhonda Lee, Jim Barnes, and
Downey Gray for submitting articles early. That’s a dual help for me, as I both
try to learn a new machine and also play nurse, in addition to usual duties.
2.
Webmaster Jim Barnes continues to do a fantastic job of
updating and adding to the Calvary website. As of May 9, 11,299 visitors have
logged in to our website since March 31, 2003.
3.
WE NOW HAVE A NEW COPIER, as of May 9!

Christian Formation Report to the
Vestry
May 11, 2005
Calvary Youth recently served lunch at
Wayside Christian Mission, after being sent forth during the service by Rev.
Ned Morris. The experience was very
meaningful as so many people served were grateful for the food and the
friendliness.
There are three weeks of classes left
for Calvary Youth Confirmands with four in the class, one youth is attending
the Adult Inquirer's/Via Media evening session, as well as approxmately 15
adults also participating. We are
grateful to Martha and Don Edling and Louisa Henson Mussler for providing the
dinners.
This Sunday the Church School will be
inflating red balloons and distributing them at the end of the 11:00 service
when the congregation will recess outside (weather permitting) to sing “Happy
Birthday,” send balloons upward, and enjoy some birthday cake in honor of
Pentecost, or Whitsunday.
On May 22nd there will be a
breakfast in honor of Calvary teachers and their families as well as members of
the Christian Formation committees. At
10:00 we will conclude Christian Formation for the 2004/2005 year by presenting
awards and gifts to students, teachers, and volunteers. Please join us and show your support for
the work that so many give generously to help Calvary grow in faith.
For Earth Day, several classes planted
a few flowers by the North parking lot in honor of the earth that God has
created, and to beautify Calvary Church.
Callie A. Hausman
Director of Christian Formation
