Minutes of January meeting
Corky
Sachs moved the approval of the January 17, 2006 minutes of the vestry;
seconded by Clyde Warner. Motion carried.
Committee Reports
Finance:
Andrea Morris presented the financial statements through January 2006. Clyde Warner moved that the report be accepted; Jim Barnes seconded. Motion carried.
Andrea Morris noted that Callie Hausman’s position as Director of Christian Education has been expanded to include duties associated with evangelism as noted in the position description for Director of Christian Formation and Evangelism (included in the materials sent out prior to the meeting). Callie will assume the new expanded position effective July 1, 2006 at a salary of $32,403 (prorated for the remaining six months of 2006) and $43,204.38 for the budget year 2007. A savings of approximately $10,000 in budget item 5090, resulting from a change in insurance carrier, will be used to defray some of the additional costs for 2006. Clyde Warner moved that budget item 5019, Director of Christian Education – Salary, be amended effective July 1 to reflect the title and salary change for Callie and that budget item 5090, Medical/Life/Disability Insurance be changed to reflect the proposed change in premiums from $25,932 to $14,830; seconded by David Webb. The motion carried.
Andrea Morris noted that she has filed for unclaimed property taxes for Calvary.
Andrea also noted that Ned Morris and Jim Barnes have completed the 2005 Parochial Report (copy included in material mailed out). Mary Sachs moved that the Parochial Report be approved; seconded by Andrea Morris. The motion carried.
Stewardship:
Ned Morris noted that 133 pledge cards had been
received to date totaling $294,288.
By-Laws/Insurance/Legal:
Corky Sachs will be the vestry liaison to the By-Laws,
Insurance and Legal committee replacing Sally Reisz whose term on the vestry
has ended. Sally will continue as a member of that committee, however. Nick
Baker reported that the committee would get to work immediately on the By-Laws
update.
Worship:
Jim Barnes drew the vestry’s attention to the February written staff report for Music. The Worship Committee met in February and its next meeting will be March 28. Jim indicated that a wooden Lenten Processional Cross has been ordered for use during Lent. The metal processional crosses will be removed from the church during Lent and the Altar Cross will be veiled during the Maundy Thursday service. Incense will be used at the Ash Wednesday services.
Christian
Formation:
David Webb drew the vestry’s attention to the February written staff report for Christian Formation and to the Christian Formation Newsletter for February. David indicated that a Rite 13 ceremony, a part of The Journey to Adulthood program (J2A), would be included in the 11:00 worship service on February 26. David reminded the vestry that February 28th was Shrove Tuesday with dinner and other activities beginning at 6:00 that evening. Other Formation news mentioned included Calvary Camp at All Saints, May 12 and 13, and Vacation Bible School at Calvary, July 30-August 4 (with St. Matthews Church).
Ned Morris reported that a Thursday Evening Lenten Program would begin March 9 and conclude on Maundy Thursday in April. The program titled “Groundwork: Digging Deep for Change and Growth” will include a light dinner, programs for children, youth and adults, and Compline.
Rhonda Lee reported that she will be conducting the upcoming Adult Formation program that will focus on a study of atonement theology as found in the letter of Paul to the Hebrews.
Building,
House and Grounds:
Clyde Warner reported that current maintenance
projects include a new lock on a door on the Christian Formation floor, a way
to lock the outer doors at the west entrance (the space between the sets of
doors now being used by homeless persons who are damaging the property), and
programmable thermostats for the office, Parish Hall and Christian Formation
areas. The purchase and installation of the four thermostats will cost $1000.
Andrea Morris moved approval of expending $1000 for the thermostats; Corky
Sachs seconded. The motion carried. Nancy Anderson reported that improvements
to the ladies restroom on the first floor are nearly complete. The Parish Hall
is the next target.
Outreach:
Jim Barnes drew the vestry’s attention to the February
written staff report for Outreach. Laina Brown reported that the Lenten Program
and Luncheon might be on Fox In The
Morning. Nancy Anderson reported that several parishioners are in need of
Crises Care and that communication among those willing to help is the only
problem getting this done. David Webb reported that Elyse Hensley has obtained
many new books for the Book Aid project. A collection box is available in the
Parish Hall for books as well as for monetary donations to the project. Ned
Morris reported that Souper Bowl Sunday was a success.
Communication:
Meg Scharre drew the vestry’s attention to the February written staff report for Communication. She reported that she has sent a news release regarding the Lenten Series to the Diocesan Newsletter. It was suggested that the Calvary Cross fundraiser might also be a good subject for the Diocesan Newsletter.
Parish Life:
Corky Sachs distributed the Sunday Coffee Hour sign up sheet for vestry participation. Corky and Ginger Ray reported that the Newcomers gathering at the home of Tom and Laura Fulton on February 12 went well. These gatherings will be repeated periodically and a Newcomers class may be developed. Corky and Ginger also reported that the reception for Louise Morris following her baptism Sunday February 19 was a gala event and those participating are thanked. Ginger Ray suggested that something be done to formally recognize Kyle Hibbs (whose burial office was read at Calvary on January 27) for his contribution to Calvary in the form of the Library artwork. The matter was assigned to the Executive Committee for review.
Junior Warden:
Jamie Hendon reported that he and the Rector would
be attending a conference in Washington, DC on endowed parishes. The conference
will have seminars on capital campaigns, attitudes toward endowments, selling
endowments, etc. They would report back to the vestry at the next vestry meeting.
Senior Warden:
Downey Gray reported that he has booked January 26
and 2, 2007 at Wooded Glen Conference and Retreat Center for next year’s vestry
retreat. He also reported that he was interested in getting together a bus/box
lunch activity for the “Sound of Music”. It was suggested that this could be a
fundraiser. Also suggested for fundraiser was a trip to see “Shakespeare in the
Park” this summer. Downey also reported that a telephone/email tree would be
helpful in order to communicate news of happenings between Sundays (especially
burial services) to the congregation.

Staff Reports
Outreach:
1. Food Donations: The
value of food donations encompasses the period from January 1 until February
13. In this time frame, we received donations worth $2649.00. There were two
big donations – one many-canned gift from Kentucky Harvest, the other from
Calvary people for SOUPER BOWL Sunday. We have received 456 cans of soup so
far, far and away a record. (Last year it was 200 cans!)
2. Food Distribution: During
January, we gave out 109 food bags that fed 186 people.
3. Clothes Shops for Men, Women and Kids: From January 1 through February 13, we have given out
clothing to 99 men, women, and children. Warm jackets, coats, gloves, and
scarves have been in most demand, and we thank all of you who have responded to
this need. The Mitten and Hat Tree has also been a most helpful addition to our
warm clothing project.
4. Cookbook, CD, and
Breads: The 2006 Lenten
Series will again feature homemade breads and a limited amount of CDs and
cookbooks.
5. Book Aid: Books continue to come in, and are well cared for by David
Webb, with advice from Timmons Owens. Another children’s book project is
underway, with collections of cash to buy books being made during hospitality
hour in the Parish Hall.
6. Crisis Care (Outreach of sorts!) Crisis Care is thankfully once again on the upswing, with
Jean Dietz and Nancy Anderson agreeing to continue coordination of this vital
caring program. Molly Isaacs-McLeod, Linda Gardone, and the Garnars have joined
the cooking ranks, and we even had somebody last Sunday offer to make aspic for
the sick!
7. The Refugees: We are
continuing to help in whatever ways we can with all of the recent natural
disasters. (See below in the music section.)
8. HABITAT: Jerry Lyndrup coordinated the 2005 house at 1113 Dixie
Highway. Plans are underway for the next house.
MUSIC:
The 20th annual Lenten Lunch and Recital Series
is gearing up for the beginning on March 8. Melvin Dickinson, Margaret
Dickinson, the Redden family, Julia Richardson, and the brass guys (Mike
Tunnell and Bruce Heim) will be the recitalists. We are pleased to report that
we have had good response to the volunteer signup sheet in the Parish Hall. We
hope some vestry members will participate in the preparation, and that many
will attend the events. We are excited to announce that the free-will offering
will be directed to the D-Fund of the Very Rev. David DuPlantier, Dean of the
Cathedral of New Orleans, for designation as he sees fit to help the victims of
hurricane Katrina. David, who grew up at Calvary, was most grateful for our offer.
The series this
year will be dedicated to the memory of Robert Nash, who volunteered his help
at the luncheons for many years.
Communications:
1. THE NEXT
CALVARY CONNECTION deadline is February 20. That is a Monday, THIS COMING
Monday. The deadline is at NOON. You
will remember that a change in policy, beginning last October, means that the
CONNECTION will now be a monthly publication. THAT COMES QUICKLY! The deadline
will always be the 20th of the month, no exceptions. If the articles
do not meet the deadline, they will be published the next month. I really hope
to stick to that, in fairness to all! The Editorial Board now meets on the
first Wednesday of the month (except for the March meeting that will be on the
last Tuesday because of Ash Wednesday!) All ye to whom it pertains, take note!
I am pleased to report that Senior Warden Downey Gray has already submitted his
report, setting a good example for the rest of the vestry responsible for news
and reports.
2. Calvary has a new logo. We are grateful to Andy Frazier for
creating the logo, and he promises us that he will find time to incorporate
that logo on the front of the CONNECTION. We are still waiting! And waiting!
3. Webmaster Jim Barnes continues to do a fantastic job of
updating and adding to the Calvary website. As of February 13, we have had
16,162 visitors to the website since March 31, 2003.

Christian
Formation Report to the Vestry
February 2006
Classes
are growing, activities are expanding, and we are beginning a new calendar year
with enthusiasm and spiritual growth.
During
January there was an Epiphany Extravaganza, including a service, dinner, and
taking down the greens. Already in the planning stages is a Thursday
evening event during Advent for decorating the church for Christmas.
Calvary
Youth have been preparing for the Rite 13 Liturgy that will take place during
the 11:00 service on Feb. 26 and we encourage everyone to be there to share
support and prayer. A luncheon was recently hosted for parents and youth.
Gail
Richardson, Stephanie Walton and myself led a Godly Play workshop for teachers
and leaders in the Diocese, which was a success. We will be offering
another one in March at the All Saints Leadership Conference. I will also
be leading two other workshops. I have been asked to run for Chair of the
Diocesan Christian Formation Committee and the vote will be decided at that
conference.
On
Feb. 11 I attended a workshop at the Presbyterian Seminary, Worship in the
home, which was informative and has given me some ideas to share with families,
an interest I have always wanted to expand on.
Anna
Haverlisko, a U of L college student and one who is actively involved in
volunteer and mission work, has agreed to co-teach the high school class with
me and David Webb. She also gave a presentation to both youth classes on
her trip to help Katrina victims.
The
Children's Choir will be singing on Sunday, February 19, which will nicely
coincide with the baptism of Louise Morris.
There
have now been two publications of the Christian Formation Newsletter and we
hope to continue offering this on a monthly basis. Comments and
suggestions are welcome.
