Voting for Search Committee Members from Vestry

This special vestry meeting was called to select five vestry representatives to a newly reorganized Search Committee of eleven total members (five vestry, six non-vestry).  The following individuals were selected to be the five vestry members of the Search Committee:

·        Art Dietz

·        Sally Reisz

·        Jeff Webb

·        Joan Wempe

·        Michele Wogaman

Michele Wogaman volunteered to speak, as a vestry representative, at each of next Sunday’s services, explaining the composition of the re-organized search committee and soliciting nominees for the six non-vestry positions.

Also, Will Cary will send a letter to all parishioners, asking for nominations of persons to serve in the six non-vestry positions on the search committee.  The letter is to include a tear-off section on the bottom for listing the nominee’s name and identifying information. It was further decided to place an insert in the bulletin for next Sunday (February 2, 2002), including this same information and tear-off sheet for nominees.

Rector’s Stance on Possible U.S. War with Iraq

During the tallying of the votes for the five vestry Search Committee members, Fr. Humke discussed with the vestry his position on a possible U.S. war with Iraq.  He indicated that he is against any such war and would like vestry input on how most appropriately to handle the war issue with the congregation if and when it arises.  He wondered if it would be helpful for him to explain his position from the pulpit and then have someone from the congregation speak who represents an alternate viewpoint.  Several vestry members commented that Fr. Humke is the most appropriate person to handle this matter, as he is an exceptionally skilled public speaker and quite capable of being sensitive to parishioners’ feelings and beliefs, regardless of whether they coincide with his own.  There was also a statement calling on other vestry members to find ways to minister to Father Humke and honor his integrity for genuinely held beliefs and his need to be true to those beliefs while still ministering to the congregation as a whole.

Accommodations and Plans for Vestry Retreat

Given that out-of-town accommodations for an overnight retreat are unavailable at this point, the vestry members agreed to hold the vestry retreat at the Presbyterian Seminary on Saturday February 8, 2003 from approximately 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, preceded by a more socially-oriented gathering at Jerry Lyndrup’s home on the evening of Friday, February 7.  The Friday evening gathering will begin at 7:00 PM and will be pot-luck;  Further details will be forthcoming from Jerry.  Senior Warden Will Cary will provide the vestry with specifics of the Saturday arrangements as soon as they are completely finalized.

Respectfully submitted,
