The Induction

The People sit. Representatives of the congregation, the clergy of the Diocese, and the community stand

before the Bishop with the new minister. The Bishop says

Holy Scripture records that when God enters into a covenant with a community of people, God establishes a sign to mark the new relationship. May the exchange of these symbolic gifts mark the covenant into which this priest and people enter today. Let these be signs of the ministry we share in this place, in our diocese, and in the church throughout the world.

Representatives of the congregation present a Bible to the new Rector, saying

Ned, accept this Bible, and be among us as one who proclaims the Word.

The Bishop presents the new Rector with a vessel of water, saying

Ned, take this water, and help me baptize in obedience to our Lord.

Others present a stole, saying

Ned, receive this stole and be among us as a pastor and priest.

Others present a book of prayers, saying

Ned, receive this book, and be among us as a man of prayer.

Others present a hymnal, saying

Ned, receive this hymnal and be among us as one who worships knowing the gift and the joy of music to be found and shared in our life together.

Others present olive oil, saying

Ned, use this oil, and be among us a healer and reconciler.

The Wardens present the keys of the church, saying

Ned, receive these keys, and let the doors of this place be open to all people.

Representatives of the clergy of the Diocese present the Constitutions and Canons of this Church, saying

Ned, obey these Canons, and be among us to share in the councils of this diocese.

Other representatives of the congregation present bread and wine, saying

Ned, take this bread and wine, and be among us to break the bread and bless the cup.

The Rector presents the vessel of water to a member of the congregation, saying

Accept this water as the sign of baptism by which we all become members of Christ’s Body and are called to new life as Christ's people in the world.

The Rector presents a Prayer Book to a member of the congregation, saying

I present to you this Book of Common Prayer, that we may all remember that it is in prayer, together and apart, that we are given strength to be the people of God.

The Rector presents the bread and wine to members of the congregation, saying

Accept and bring to the table this bread and wine, gifts of God's creation and the work of human hands.

The Bishop then says

Ned, and the people of Calvary Church, let all these be signs of the ministry which is mine and yours in this place.

People  Amen.

The new minister then kneels in the midst of the church and says,

O Lord my God, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; yet you have called your servant to stand in your house, and to serve at your altar.  To you and to your service I devote myself, body, soul, and spirit. Fill my memory with the record of your mighty works; enlighten my understanding with the light of your Holy Spirit; and may all the desires of my heart and will center in what you would have me do. Make me an instrument of your salvation for the people entrusted to my care, and grant that I may faithfully administer your holy Sacraments, and by my life and teaching set forth your true and living Word. Be always with me in carrying out the duties of my ministry. In prayer, quicken my devotion; in praises, heighten my love and gratitude; in preaching, give me readiness of thought and expression; and grant that, by the clearness and brightness of your holy Word, all the world may be drawn into your blessed kingdom. All this I ask for the sake of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Bishop then presents the new minister to the congregation, saying

Greet your new Rector.

The congregation expresses its approval. Applause is appropriate. The Bishop greets the new minister.

The new minister then says to the people

The peace of the Lord be always with you.

People   And also with you.

The new minister then greets other members of the clergy, family members, and the congregation. The people greet each other.

The Great Thanksgiving: Eucharistic Prayer B                                                                                   PB 367

Celebrant      The Lord be with you.

   People           And also with you.

   Celebrant      Lift up your hearts.

People           We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant      Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People            It is right to give him thanks and praise.

The Celebrant proceeds

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Through the great shepherd of your flock, Jesus Christ our Lord; who after his resurrection sent forth his apostles to preach the Gospel and to teach all nations; and promised to be with them always, even to the end of the ages. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:                  Setting by David Hurd: S 124

The people stand or kneel.

The Celebrant continues

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or to lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

Celebrant and People

We remember his death,
We proclaim his resurrection,
We await his coming in glory;

 The Celebrant continues

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with the Blessed Virgin Mary and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

People and Celebrant

Our Father, who art in heaven,

            hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

             but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power

             and the glory,

             for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread

The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept.

The Fraction Anthem                                                                                       Setting by Gerald Near, S 155

Facing the people, the Celebrant says the following Invitation

The Gifts of God for the People of God.  Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

The ministers receive the Sacrament in both kinds, and then immediately deliver it to the people.

All Baptized Christians are welcome to receive communion. It is offered at the Altar and in the Nave. Anyone who is not baptized is welcome to come forward and receive a blessing.

After Communion, the Celebrant says Let us pray.

Celebrant and People

Almighty Father, we thank you for feeding us with the holy food of the Body and Blood of your Son, and for uniting us through him in the fellowship of your Holy Spirit.  We thank you for raising up among us faithful servants for the ministry of your Word and Sacraments.  We pray that Ned may be an effective example in word and action, in love and patience, and in holiness of life.  Grant that we, with him, may serve you now, and always rejoice in your glory; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
