WE THANK all the youth who are participating in today’s 11:00 service for Youth Sunday. Thanks also to their parents, who make it all possible. We celebrate the birthday of the church today in the services, as well as honoring our mothers. Please join us for birthday cake at the hospitality hour in Parker Hall. We will gather in the courtyard for the balloon/bubble ceremony after the 11:00 service, and then proceed to Parker Hall.

TO HONOR MOTHERS, THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH HOME has sent us its traditional Mothers’ Day offering envelopes. Envelopes are in the pews – please be generous. All gifts will go to support the building of the new St. Luke’s Chapel.

ADULT FORUM: The Forum continues today at 10 with the 2008 Inquirers’ class, Introduction to Anglicanism. The Forum this week is led by the rector.  The topic for today is Calvary Church 101 – Being an Episcopalian in a special place.  This class is mandatory for those who are interested in confirmation. For a complete schedule of Adult Forums through June 8, please see the bulletin board next to the sacristy. See Fr. Ned if you have not already indicated whether you wish to be baptized or confirmed on May 17 (Presiding Bishop at All Saints) or June 8 (Bishop Gulick here).

MORNING PRAYER AT 8:00 a.m. has been discontinued. We thank Sandy MacLean, Betty Vernon, Ned Morris, and David Stewart for officiating at this service that has been offered for the last few months.

CHRISTIAN FORMATION APPRECIATION DAY IS NEXT SUNDAY, and it is also the last day of classes for the 2007-2008 year. We are grateful to the teachers, the students, the committee members, and especially to Callie Hausman for a wonderful year.

SAFEGUARDING OUR CHILDREN TRAINING will be this coming Thursday, May 15, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church. Please let Callie know if you will attend.

PRESIDING BISHOP KATHARINE JEFFERTS SCHORI VISITS OUR DIOCESE: Plan to be with our Presiding Bishop for one or more of the five public events next weekend, May 16-18. For more information, please see the diocesan website www.episcopalky.org, or the posters in the Parish Hall and the north entry. If you wish to carpool to the Saturday service at All Saints, please sign up in the Parish Hall. That service will be at 12 noon CST, and two of Calvary’s youth will be baptized.

CHURCH TOUR: Plan to join Larry Frederiksen as he leads a tour of Calvary on May 18 at 12:30.

EAT AT MARK’S FEED STORE at 1014 Bardstown Road ALL DAY AND EVENING AND HELP THE CALVARY FOOD CLOSET! The Youth Group has made arrangements for 15% of all food purchases to be contributed to the Calvary Food Closet when specific vouchers are given to the Feed Store staff on Wednesday, May 21. Look for these vouchers in the Parish Hall and on the Youth bulletin board on the second floor! You may also contact Susie Flatt Licht or a Youth Group member to receive a voucher. Susie's cell phone: 387-5807, email: susieflatt@insightbb.com

GOING GREEN at the CALVARY CAMP RETREAT ONLY TWO WEEKS AWAY!  We will enjoy the natural green beauty at All Saints’ Conference Center and explore the green season of Pentecost. We will learn about God’s creation and our roles as stewards of this great gift. Come and relax, refresh, and recharge. The dates are Friday, May 23, to Sunday, May 25. Please see Mary Redden or Callie if you have questions. The regular services of 7:45, 9:00, and 11:00 will also take place at Calvary on May 25, with the Rev. Richard Humke officiating.

SAMMY'S PLAYGROUND HAS ARRIVED! Please go to Parker Hall to see the boxes sent by the Cedar Works playset manufacturer and a picture of what is to be! Thanks to the generosity of Anita Richards, we will have a special place for our Calvary children to play and an expression of love as Anita has named the playground in honor of her deceased grandson, Samuel Reed Pardue (1998 – 2003). Please see the May issue of the Calvary Connection for more information about a very special boy, Sammy. Sammy’s Playgound dedication will be June 1 at 10:45 a.m.

ON JUNE 1 at 7:30 P.M., there will be a benefit concert for Help Ministries at the St. Paul Family Life Center in Douglass Loop. The MOTET SINGERS will perform a concert of sacred and pop music. Ticket information is available at Calvary (they are $10.00), and all proceeds will go to the HMCL. For further information, please contact Ned Morris, Margaret Dickinson, or Laura Curry at 836-0639. Also on June 1 at 1:30 p.m., Melvin Dickinson will give an organ dedicatory recital at the UCC Church at Fourth and Oak Streets. Make a day of it on June 1, all downtown!

CALVARY BOOK CLUB: Mark your calendars for the next meeting that will be on Tuesday, June 3, at the home of Ceci Walcek. The book is The Memory Keeper’s Daughter by Kim Edwards. The complete schedule is published in the May CONNECTION.

GRADUATES: As is the custom, we would like to recognize those in our Calvary family who are being graduated from high school or college this spring. The complete list will appear in the June-July issue of the CALVARY CONNECTION, but we need your help in making sure we know about everybody. Please give the names of the graduates you know about to Margaret Dickinson as soon as possible (email is mldickinson@calvaryepiscopal.org or call 587-6011, or just tell her!).

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL (VBS) registration is being accepted now.  Calvary is hosting for other area Episcopal Churches, including St. Matthew's, St. Paul's, St. Mark's, St. Andrew's, Resurrection, and hopefully OMS and St. George's too.  Please help us welcome children, youth, and adult volunteers by signing up today to help with supplies, but most of all to help with your presence. If you want a taste of Jerusalem, you can help transform Calvary.  See Callie if you have any questions.

RECYCLING CONTINUES: Glenna Harris and Georgea Ward are heading up a campaign to recycle all plastic, glass, tin, and metals. The bin is right outside the kitchen. We ask that you place all such materials in the bin (scraping the plates after hospitality hour, of course!). And don’t forget to save your aluminum cans for the Animal Care Society. (Please see the bulletin board next to the sacristy so you can enjoy a thank you note for the three carloads of “loot” we took to ACS last week, as well as a picture of note! Know also that we continue to accept toys, supplies, and sponsors, as we deliver cans often to ACS.)

JERUSALEM IN NOVEMBER: In addition to the Jerusalem that will be constructed at Calvary in July for Vacation Bible School, you are invited to visit the real thing in November (3-15). Fr. Ned will lead a group at that time, and invites you to contact him for more information. There will be a meeting of interested parties on June 1 at 10:00 a.m.

KROGER GIFT CARDS: Please remember that Calvary receives 4% of what you spend at Kroger if we attain a certain amount. Kroger gift cards are available in the church office.

FOOD and CLOTHING STATISTICS: This past week (May5-8) we fed 34 people, and clothed 35. Remember that your donations fuel these outreach programs, so don’t forget to bring canned food and gently used (or new) clothing when you come on Sundays. WE ARE IN DIRE NEED OF CLOTHING FOR MEN!! WE REQUEST ANYTHING YOU CAN BRING, INCLUDING AND ESPECIALLY SOCKS!

MICHAEL CHERRY SCHOLARSHIP: The members of the Calvary Youth String Ensemble have all participated, enjoyed, and furthered their musical education at the University of Louisville Suzuki String Institute that occurs every June. Sandra Cherry established a scholarship for this Institute in honor of her son, Michael Cherry. He was a member of Calvary, an exemplary acolyte, gifted violinist/violist, and a delightful young man whose life was all too short. This scholarship allows young musicians, who might not otherwise have the opportunity, to attend this week-long Institute. If you would like to donate to this scholarship program, please see Judy Wilson. Checks should be made out to LSSA (Louisville Suzuki String Association), with Michael Cherry Scholarship as memo.

HEIFER PROJECT: Geoff Bugbee will be back on June 9 (Monday) beginning at 6:00 p.m. to present to Calvary’s youth group a project dealing with the Heifer Project. Please see Susie Licht or Callie if you are able to come.

USHERS NEEDED: Sometimes emergencies arise, and an usher is missing at the last minute. If you would be willing to be an usher who could be called upon at the last minute, please see Will Cary or Carl Hausman today. Thank you!
