NEXT SUNDAY, September 12: THIS WEEK AT CALVARY |
The Right Reverend Edwin F. Gulick, Jr., Invite your prayers and presence On Tuesday, the seventh of September, 821 South Fourth Street A reception follows. |
MORNING PRAYER is offered Monday through Friday at 8:30 a.m. in the chancel. This short service is a good way to begin each day, and is a part of our tradition as members of the Episcopal Church. A short homily will be given by Fr. Jon Tuesday through Friday. All participants are welcome to join each other for coffee or tea following the service. There will be no Monday service this week due to the Labor Day holiday.
THE HOLY EUCHARIST will be offered this coming Wednesday, August 25, at 12:05 p.m. Please join us if you are able.
BREAKFAST is served today at 9:30 a.m. Thanks, as always, to Laina and Griffin Brown and Michael Hensley.
PLEASE REMEMBER that as we return from summer activities, Calvary Church has a regular commitment for outreach to assist the poor and needy. If anyone requests assistance on a Sunday morning, please refer them to our daily food and clothing ministries (Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.), or to the Rector for assistance. In order for us to provide the fullest help, please do not give money.
WE OFFER SYMPATHY to Suzanne, Tessa, Tori, and Michael Long and families upon the death of their mother and grandmother, the Reverend Shirley Hall Humphrey, this past week in Florida. May she rest in peace, and may light perpetual shine upon her.
THE CALVARY CONNECTION: The deadline for the October-November edition of the CONNECTION is September 18. The Editorial Board will meet electronically this coming Wednesday, September 8.
EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS will meet today for a training session after the 11:00 service.
VIOLONCELLO RECITAL: You are cordially invited to attend a violoncello recital by Anne Richardson today at 3:00 p.m. at the Dickinson Bach Haus, 4607 Hanford Lane. Accompanied by Debbie Dierks, the program will include works by Ginastera, Schubert, Bruch, Schumann, and Popper. We also thank Anne for playing the prelude at the 11:00 service today and last Sunday, and look forward to hearing her for the prelude this coming Tuesday for the Celebration of New Ministry.
THE PARISH PICNIC: The Parish Picnic is NEXT WEEK! Sign up today in Frazier Parish Hall to bring a side dish. We will provide beverages and fried chicken. Enjoy the fellowship, games, refreshments, and surroundings at Calvary. If weather permits, we will have seating outdoors as well as indoors.
FOOD AND CLOTHING: This past week we fed 94 people and clothed 71. Please consider bringing food each week (soup, beef stew, canned goods, cereal, etc.) for the needy we serve in our neighborhood. Our Foods of the Month for September are canned and fresh vegetables and fruit. We also need tuna, spaghetti, sauce, cereal, beef stew, and soup. We continue to be in dire need of clothing, especially for men.
BEERS WITH meets Tuesday, September 14, 8:00 p.m. at O'Shea's on Baxter Avenue. The Nicene Creed, a statement of our faith, will be the main theme. We will also explore heresies that were relevant or influential at the time of the creation of the Nicene Creed (such as Arianism). Join us for enlightening and interesting conversation and appetizing refreshments. Father Erdman will be leading the discussion, supported by Larry Townsend.
CHRISTIAN FORMATION BEGINS NEXT WEEK!!! Adult Forum and classes for children and youth will begin on September 12 at 10:00 a.m. with everyone meeting in the church for a blessing and teacher commissioning. Following the brief service, adults will join Father Jon in Parker Hall for coffee and conversation. Youth and children will go upstairs to their regular classrooms for registration, introductions, and games.
NEWCOMERS: An orientation will be held in the church on Sunday, Sept. 26, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. If you are interested in learning more about Calvary, our history, what the Episcopal faith represents, and how you can be involved, please join us.
THANKSGIVING TURKEYS: It’s not too early to begin planning for our annual Thanksgiving turkey project. At this time, our funds are so low that we cannot plan on giving out $12,000 worth of turkeys, as we did last year. We will be raising some money through the continuation of our CHICKENS INTO TURKEYS pot pie project, however, and have begun taking orders for a September distribution date. The pot pies, as you may recall, are homemade by Laina Brown and crew, and are sold at $12 each, frozen and ready to bake. If there is interest, we may also be able to offer smaller pies for $6 each. They are great for a last-minute meal. Please sign up today to order your pies, so that we may commence with the implementation of this unique way to raise money for Thanksgiving to feed our loyal and needy food clients.
CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM: Calvary is hosting a Career Development Program for those who are interested in a new job or vocation. If you would like to participate, or know of someone who would, please consider coming to a series of eight workshops from Tuesday, September 21, through Nov. 9, 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. RSVP to Callie Hausman, or Gionatan Surrenti, at 587-6011, ext. 22.
