About Us

Calvary Episcopal Church Chapel

Welcome to Calvary

First-time visitors are impressed with the arching beauty of Calvary’s interior, which appears to many as an ideal setting for meditation and worship. The building, begun in 1872, is a notable example of Victorian Gothic revival style. Its stained-glass windows, three of them from the famous studio of L.C. Tiffany, contribute to a conviction that one is stepping into a comfortable era of the American past when one enters Calvary Church.

Calvary Church today attracts a membership from eight counties of Northern Kentucky and Southern Indiana, all of them participating in an Episcopal program deliberately designed for people with distinct and contrasting needs. Our worship services follow the Book of Common Prayer, and we retain the sacred traditions of the Anglican Communion. But we pride ourselves on our tolerance for a wide variety of opinions, and invite inquiry into the most diverse and most disturbing problems that confront people living in troubled times.

Housed in Louisville’s city central, Calvary has a wide variety of outreach programs. Our staff is dedicated to providing comfort and help to those in physical and emotional need. Drawing much of our membership from some of Louisville's most affluent neighborhoods and suburbs, we emphasize the teaching of Christianity to all ages. Study programs throughout the church year are designed to help us understand ourselves and to seek ways in which we can better serve Christian ideals.

Many visitors come to Calvary to explore its architectural heritage. Many more are attracted by the superb quality of its music, under the professional leadership of Margaret and Melvin Dickinson. A large segment of our membership consists of persons who first came here under such circumstances, and were then inspired to inquire how Calvary and its programs might further enrich their lives.

So we welcome you. We welcome your inquiries. We invite your friendship and participation in the Calvary community. The Reverend John Hines or the lay staff will be happy to meet with you and help you become more familiar with Calvary and its services. For an appointment, call the church office, (502) 587-6011 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, or Saturday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. or leave a message on Fr. Hines’ voice mail anytime.
